# Request time off

> Choose an absence type, dates, day length, and supporting details, then review balance and conflicts before submitting.

Use **Time off** to send an absence request under an assigned policy. The request drawer shows the type, dates, and a balance preview, and may ask for a substitute or certificate depending on the policy.

## Choose dates and duration

Open **Time off** and start a new request. Select the time off type first, then set the date range. If the policy offers full or half days, choose the duration for the relevant days. Check the balance preview after changing the dates: it is based on the current selection, so review it before submitting.

The drawer can show conflicts with other absences. Use [Team calendar](https://help.worklayer.ai/help/time-off/balances-calendar.md) to see the visible team context, then return to the request if you need different dates. The calendar only shows absences your role may see.

## Add supporting details and submit

**1. Complete the request**

Enter a substitute or attach a certificate if the chosen type asks for one. Review every date and any conflict shown in the drawer.

**2. Submit**

Send the request and check that it appears with a status in **Time off**. A submitted request may await review or be approved automatically under the company policy.

**3. Follow the decision**

If the request is rejected, read the reason and create a new request with corrected details. A rejected request is final in this flow.

## If your plans change

An approved request cannot be edited. Cancel it and submit a new request for the new dates. If the type you expect is missing, ask an administrator to check the time off policies assigned to your employee record.
